Yogaśāstra 4.7–8: Karma and Vāsanā

The yogin's karma is neither white nor black; that of others is black, mixed, or white. As it ripens, only the corresponding vāsanās become manifest.

The karma (karma | nom sg) of the yogin (yoginaḥ | gen sg) is neither white nor black (aśuklākṛṣṇam | nom sg n); that of others (itareṣām | gen pl) is threefold [black, white-and-black, or white] (trividham | nom sg n).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Conscious action does not always need to be judged as good or bad (aśuklākṛṣṇa). It can arise from clarity and serve life without clinging to the outcome.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

The Bhāṣya divides karma into four kinds: black among evildoers; white-black in externally performed actions that harm and benefit others; white among those practicing tapas, svādhyāya, and dhyāna, which depend on mind alone and do not harm others; and neither white nor black among renunciants whose kleśas have dwindled and whose present body is their last. For the yogin it is not white because the fruit is renounced and not black because of nonappropriation; the first three kinds occur among other beings.

Yoga Śāstra Vyāsa-Bhāṣya
The work of an ascetic is neither pure nor dark and that of others is of three kinds.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
The actions of the Yogi are neither white nor black; those of others are of three kinds.
Ganganatha Jha - 1907
Paul Deussen - 1908
The yogin's karma is neither-white-nor-black; [the karma] of others is of three kinds.

From this [threefold karma] (tataḥ), there is only (eva) the manifestation (abhivyaktiḥ | nom sg) of those Vāsanās (vāsanānām | gen pl) which correspond to the fruition of that [karma] (tad-vipākānuguṇānām | gen pl).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Not every conditioning (vāsanā) appears at all times. Whatever can ripen under present conditions (vipāka) comes forward—and you can meet it with awareness.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

From the threefold karma of other beings, only those vāsanā that correspond to its particular vipāka become manifest. When karma for a divine birth ripens, for example, it cannot manifest hellish, animal, or human vāsanās; the same applies to the other kinds of birth.

Yoga Śāstra Vyāsa-Bhāṣya
Therefrom (results) manifestation of those mental deposits alone which are conformable to its fructification.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
Thence is the manifestation of the impressions or residua which are suitable to its fruition.
Ganganatha Jha - 1907
Paul Deussen - 1908
As a result of this there follows the manifestation of those subconscious-impressions only which correspond to the fruition of their [karma].
James Haughton Woods - 1914

Hallo Alex,
meinst Du ~i~"sukla~~ (hell)? Also ~i~"suk.l~~? Was soll das heißen?
Namaste und herzliche Grüße
