Yogaśāstra 4.27–28: Interruptions of Viveka

In gaps in discriminative knowledge, old saṃskāras produce other cognitions; like the kleśas, they must be eliminated by counteraction and cessation of their cause.

In the gaps of that [discriminative cognition] (tac-chidreṣu | loc pl), other ideas (pratyayāntarāṇi | nom pl) [arise] from the Saṃskāras (saṃskārebhyaḥ | abl pl).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
When old patterns (saṃskāra) return, you have not failed. Notice them and gently reorient yourself.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

In gaps within the stream of citta that otherwise apprehends only the difference between sattva and puruṣa, other ideas still arise: “I am,” “mine,” “I know,” or “I do not know.” They come from previous saṃskāras whose seeds are already dwindling.

In the intervals thereof other thoughts arise from the self-continuant impressions.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
In the intervals thereof, there are other cognitions, due to impressions.
Ganganatha Jha - 1907
Während der Unterbrechungen dieser [Tätigkeit des Unterscheidens] entstehen anderartige Vorstellungen aus rückständigen Eindrücken.
Paul Deussen - 1908
In the intervals of this [mind-stuff] there are other presented-ideas [coming] from subliminal-impressions.

The elimination (hānam | nom sg) of these [ideas] (eṣām | gen pl) has been described (uktam | nom sg n) as in the case of the Kleśas (kleśavat).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Letting go (hāna) begins not with struggle but with clear seeing. When you stop feeding a painful pattern (kleśa), it can gradually lose its hold.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

Just as kleśas in the condition of burned seeds can no longer sprout, a previous saṃskāra burned by the fire of knowledge no longer produces ideas. The saṃskāras of knowledge, by contrast, remain until citta’s task is complete and are not at issue in this removal.

Yoga Śāstra Vyāsa-Bhāṣya
The means of the avoidance of these are explained to be as in the case of the afflictions.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
The destruction of these should be as already described in the case of the distractions.
Ganganatha Jha - 1907
Die Überwindung derselben sowie der Plagen ist (2,10–11) besprochen worden.
Paul Deussen - 1908
The escape from these [subliminal-impressions] is described as being like [the escape from] the hindrances.
James Haughton Woods - 1914

- Viel Freude.
