These (te | nom pl m) subtle [afflictions] (sūkṣmāḥ | nom pl m) are to be eliminated by reabsorption into their cause (pratiprasava-heyāḥ | nom pl m).

Gently trace a quiet reaction (sūkṣma) back towards its source. When you notice early what feeds it, there is room for a different response.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

In the yogin, the five kleśa that have become subtle are like burned seeds. When citta returns into its cause after completing its task, they disappear together with it. This is their removal through pratiprasava.

These, when subtile, are to be evaded by an antagonistic production.

These, the subtile ones, should be suppressed by retrogression.

When a distressing pattern sends out waves (vṛtti), stay with breath and bodily sensation in meditation (dhyāna). You do not have to fight the wave for it to settle.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

The coarse activities of the kleśa are first attenuated by kriyā-yoga and then removed by discriminative meditation (prasaṃkhyāna-dhyāna) until they become subtle and finally resemble burned seeds. The Vyāsa-Bhāṣya compares this to cleaning a cloth: coarse dirt is removed first, then the subtler dirt with a stronger method.

Yoga Śāstra Vyāsa-Bhāṣya
Their ‘modifications’ ‘when with afflictions’ modify the mind by pressing themselves upon the attention are to be got rid of by meditation.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
Of these, the functions are to be suppressed by contemplation.
Ganganatha Jha - 1907
Ihre Entwicklungen [zu groben, bewußten kleśa] müssen überwunden werden durch Meditation.
Paul Deussen - 1908
The fluctuations of these should be escaped by means of contemplation.
James Haughton Woods - 1914
