Yogaśāstra 2.18–19: Four Levels of the Guṇas

The four levels extend from featureless pradhāna through buddhi and subtle evolutes to senses and gross elements; their purpose is experience and liberation.

the visible
The seen (dṛśyam | nom sg) has the character of illumination, activity and persistence (prakāśa-kriyā-sthiti-śīlam | nom sg n), consists of the elements and sense organs (bhūtendriyātmakam | nom sg n), and has experience and liberation [of puruṣa] as its purpose (bhogāpavargārtham | nom sg n).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Explore each experience as an interplay of brightness, movement, and rest (prakāśa, kriyā, sthiti). Ask not only what it gives you, but also how it might serve learning and freedom (bhoga, apavarga).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

The seen consists of sattva as luminosity, rajas as activity and tamas as stability. These changing guṇa produce the gross and subtle elements and the faculties. Their purpose is twofold: bhoga, the still-undifferentiated ascertainment of pleasant and unpleasant guṇa-forms, and apavarga, the ascertainment of the experiencer's own nature.

According to the Vyāsa-Bhāṣya, bondage and liberation actually occur in buddhi but are attributed to puruṣa, just as the victory or defeat of warriors is attributed to their lord. Buddhi's failure to fulfil its purpose is bondage; its completion is liberation.

Yoga Śāstra Vyāsa-Bhāṣya
The visual (including the visible) whose habit is illumination, action and rest and which consists of the elements and the organs, is for the sake of experience and emancipation.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
The spectacle is of the nature of illumination, activity and inertia; it consists of the elements and the sense-organs ; it is for the purpose of experience and emancipation.
Ganganatha Jha - 1907
Dasjenige, welches als Charakter Erhellung [Sattvam], Betätigung [Rajas] und Starrheit [Tamas], als Bestandteile die Elemente und Organe und als Zweck den Genuß und die Erlösung hat, ist das zu Sehende.
Paul Deussen - 1908
With a disposition to brightness and to activity and to inertia, and with the elements and the organs as its essence, and with its purpose the experience and the liberation [of the Self], [this is] the object-of-sight.
James Haughton Woods - 1914

developmental stages
The developmental stages of the guṇa (guṇa-parvāṇi | nom pl) [are] the particularised [gross evolutes], the unparticularised [subtle evolutes], the merely marked [buddhi], and the unmarked [prakṛti] (viśeṣāviśeṣa-liṅga-mātrāliṅgāni | nom pl).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Explore a bodily sensation from what can be clearly named (viśeṣa) to its subtlest, still unformed trace (aliṅga). Between them lies a whole spectrum that you do not have to explain immediately.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

The Vyāsa-Bhāṣya divides the unfolding of the guṇa into four levels:

  1. Viśeṣa: the five gross elements, ten faculties and manas.
  2. Aviśeṣa: the five tanmātra and asmitā.
  3. Liṅga-mātra: mahat, the first merely marked manifestation.
  4. Aliṅga: unmanifest and unmarked pradhāna.

The three manifest levels arise for the sake of puruṣa and are impermanent. Unmarked pradhāna, by contrast, is regarded as unproduced; the guṇa themselves do not perish but appear to arise and disappear through their changing manifestations.

Yoga Śāstra Vyāsa-Bhāṣya
The divisions (of condition) of the qualities are (1) the diverse, (2) the non-diverse, (3) the merely (once) resolvable and (4) the irresolvable.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
The specific and the unspecific, the solely mergent, and the non-mergent—are the stages of the Attributes.
Ganganatha Jha - 1907
Paul Deussen - 1908
The particularized and the unparticularized [forms] and the resoluble only [into primary matter] and irresoluble <1> - primary-matter —are the divisions of the aspects (guṇa).
James Haughton Woods - 1914
