Yogaśāstra 3.23–25: Strength and Hidden Things

Saṃyama on friendliness, compassion, or joy produces powers; saṃyama on strength grants an elephant's power, and inner cognitive light reveals subtle, hidden, or distant objects.

Through [Saṃyama] on friendliness and the further [two cultivations: compassion and appreciative joy] (maitry-ādiṣu | loc pl), powers (balāni | nom pl) [arise].
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Bring someone to mind and nourish friendliness, compassion, or appreciative joy with every exhalation. What you cultivate repeatedly can become a sustaining strength.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

The Vyāsa-Bhāṣya relates maitryādi to three dispositions from 1.33: maitrī, karuṇā, and muditā. Cultivating each leads to samādhi and saṃyama and produces an unfailing corresponding power. Upekṣā, by contrast, counts as detached neutrality rather than a cultivation; it therefore gives rise to neither samādhi, saṃyama, nor power.

Through [Saṃyama] on strengths (baleṣu | loc pl), elephant-strength and similar [strengths] (hasti-balādīni | nom pl n) [arise].
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
While standing, find the stillness and grounded strength of an elephant: heavy feet, free breath, soft gaze. Explore strength not as hardness but as steady presence.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

Through saṃyama on the strength of an elephant, the yogin becomes elephant-strong, according to the Vyāsa-Bhāṣya. The commentary also gives the strength of Garuḍa and the strength of the wind as examples.

Yoga Śāstra Vyāsa-Bhāṣya

By directing the light of a [special] cognitive activity (pravṛtty-āloka-nyāsāt | abl sg) [onto an object], knowledge of [objects that are] subtle, concealed, and distant (sūkṣma-vyavahita-viprakṛṣṭa-jñānam | nom sg) [arises].
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Cast the light of your attention on one small, previously overlooked aspect of an experience. Become still enough to sense what is subtle beneath the obvious.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

The Vyāsa-Bhāṣya connects this Sūtra with a special inner illumination of perception (pravṛttyāloka). When the yogin directs this light toward an object, even objects that are ordinarily too subtle (sūkṣma), concealed (vyavahita), or distant (viprakṛṣṭa) become knowable.

Yoga Śāstra Vyāsa-Bhāṣya
A knowledge of the minute, concealed and distant (objects is produced) by directing towards them the faculty of perception, which is (produced by) the performance of Sanyama (restraint) with regard to the luminous (sāttvika) vṛtti.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
From the application of the light of the (luminous) disposition, (results) the knowledge of the subtile, the intercepted and the remote.
Ganganatha Jha - 1907
Durch Anwendung [der Allzucht] auf das Anschauen der [1,35 beschriebenen] Tätigkeit erfolgt Kenntnis des Subtilen, Verborgenen und Entfernten.
Paul Deussen - 1908
As a result of casting the light of a [supernormal] activity [there arises] knowledge of the subtile, the concealed, and the remote.
James Haughton Woods - 1914
