Yogaśāstra 3.13–14: Property, Time, and State

The model of citta also applies to elements and senses: a persisting dharmin bears past, present, and still indeterminate properties.

explained
Through this [model of Citta-transformations] (etena | ins sg n), the transformations of property, temporal characteristic, and state (dharma-lakṣaṇāvasthā-pariṇāmāḥ | nom pl) in the elements and sense organs (bhūtendriyeṣu | loc pl) [are] explained (vyākhyātāḥ | nom pl m ppp).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Explore change (pariṇāma) in a simple posture: its form, its course through time, and its shifting intensity. Your body is not a fixed picture but a living process.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

The Vyāsa-Bhāṣya extends the model of transformation explained for Citta to the elements and senses. In dharma-pariṇāma, one property recedes in a bearer and another emerges; in lakṣaṇa-pariṇāma, a property passes through the temporal marks future, present, and past; in avasthā-pariṇāma, its particular strength or condition changes. These three aspects do not transcend their underlying dharmin: just as clay remains clay when a lump becomes a jar, the material persists while property, temporal mark, and condition change.

Yoga Śāstra Vyāsa-Bhāṣya
By this (exposition of the modifications of the internal organs) the (three) modifications in the shape of property (Dharma), indication (Lakṣaṇa) and position (Avasthā) in (or of) the elements-and organs, have been (sufficiently) explained.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
This also explains the modifications of property, time and condition, in the elementary substances and the sense-organs.
Ganganatha Jha - 1907
Damit sind in bezug auf Elemente und Sinnesorgane die [durch die drei Akte bedingten] Umwandlungen ihrer Naturbeschaffenheiten, Merkmale und Zustände erklärt.
Paul Deussen - 1908
Thus, with regard to elements and to organs, mutations of external-aspect and of time-variation and of intensity have been enumerated.

States come and go. Sense the continuity (dharmin) connecting past, present, and still-emerging experience.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

According to the Vyāsa-Bhāṣya, the dharmin is the continuous bearer of quiescent, arisen, and as yet indeterminate properties. The commentary defends this continuity against a doctrine of momentary properties alone: without a persisting bearer, neither karmic experience, memory, nor recognition of an object could be explained.

add. tatra PM2026 ante śāntoditāvyapadeśyadharmānupātī
Critical Apparatus

The additional tatra in PM2026 explicitly links the definition of the substrate to the preceding discussion. It changes little in the doctrine but makes the transition syntactically clearer. PE1904 remains unchanged as the selected base text.

Apparatus Comment
A Dharmī is that which follows upon (or has) the properties in the shape of Śānta (tranquil), udita (risen) and avyapaddṣya (incapable of denomination).
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
The subject is that which is correlated to the properties of tranquility, activity, and latency (indescribability).
Ganganatha Jha - 1907
Hierbei ist der Beschaffenheitsträger der beruhigten, der erhabenen und der unaussprechlichen Beschaffenheit entsprechend.
Paul Deussen - 1908
A substance conforms itself to quiescent and uprisen and indeterminable external-aspects.
