Yogaśāstra 3.41–42: Hearing, Body, and Space

Saṃyama on the relation of the hearing faculty and space produces divine hearing; directed at body and space together with lightness, it enables bodily travel through space.

Through Saṃyama on the relation (saṃbandha-saṃyamāt | abl sg) between the faculty of hearing and space [as an element] (śrotrākāśayoḥ | gen du), divine hearing (divyaṃ śrotram | nom sg) [arises].
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Close your eyes and listen first to a sound, then to the space in which it appears. Notice how hearing (śrotra) widens when you also attend to the silence around the sound.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

The Vyāsa-Bhāṣya calls ākāśa the basis of all faculties of hearing and all sounds, and the auditory faculty the organ inferred from the apprehension of sound. Saṃyama on the relation between hearing and space gives rise to divine hearing.

Yoga Śāstra Vyāsa-Bhāṣya
A divine organ of hearing is developed in the ascetic by his performing restraint with regard to the connection between the organ of hearing and the ether.

As a result of constraint upon the relation between the organ-of-hearing and the air (ākāśa), [there arises] the supernal organ-of-hearing.

Through Saṃyama on the relation (saṃbandha-saṃyamāt | abl sg) between body and space [as an element] (kāyākāśayoḥ | gen du) and (ca) through Samāpatti with the lightness of a cotton fibre (laghu-tūla-samāpatteḥ | abl sg), movement [of the body] through space (ākāśa-gamanam | nom sg) [arises].
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Move slowly as though your body were as light as a cotton fibre. Feel the ground and space at the same time: lightness comes from releasing unnecessary tension, not from abandoning the body.
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - modern transfer

According to the Vyāsa-Bhāṣya, space is related to the body by giving it room. Through saṃyama on this relation and samāpatti on increasingly subtle light things down to the atom, the yogin becomes light; the commentary describes a progression from walking on water to moving on spider threads and rays of light, and finally moving freely through space.

Yoga Śāstra Vyāsa-Bhāṣya
A power of walking through the air is developed in the ascetic by his obtaining a state of lightness like a light piece of cotton, from performing restraint with regard to the connection which a body has with air.
James R. Ballantyne - 1852
From the Sanyama over the relation of the body and Âkâsâ, (results) passage through space, from the acquisition of levity like that of cotton.
Ganganatha Jha - 1907
Durch Anwendung der Allzucht auf die Verbindung von Leib und Luftraum und durch Werden wie leichte Baumwolle erfolgt Gehen im Luftraum.
Paul Deussen - 1908
Either as the result of constraint upon the relation between the body and the air (ākāśa), or as the result of the balanced-state of lightness, such as that of the cotton-fibre, there follows the passing through air.
James Haughton Woods - 1914
