Vijñāna Bhairava Tantra 18–21: Śakti as Śiva’s Disclosure

Śakti is never separate from Śiva; as light enables sight, Śiva is known through Śakti. Śakti is gate and access.

Metre: Anuṣṭubh
Just as (yad-vat) non-difference (abhedaḥ | nom sg) is always (sarvadā) established (sthitaḥ | nom sg m ppp) between Śakti and the possessor of Śakti (śakti-śaktimatoḥ | gen du),
so therefore (atas), because the bearer of the attribute is identical with that attribute (tad-dharma-dharmitvāt | abl sg), the highest Śakti (parā śaktiḥ | nom sg) [is] of the highest self (parātmanaḥ | gen sg).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Between Śakti and the bearer of Śakti there is never any real separation. Therefore the supreme Śakti is nothing other than the supreme Self itself.

The burning power (dāhikā śaktiḥ | nom sg) of fire (vahneḥ | gen sg) is not (na) conceived (vibhāvyate | 3p sg pas pres caus) as separate (vyatiriktā | nom sg f ppp).
Only (kevalam) this (ayam | nom sg m) is an entry-point (prārambhaḥ | nom sg) in leading [one] into (praveśane | loc sg) the reality of recognition (jñāna-sattāyām | loc sg).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Just as the power to burn is not separate from fire, Śakti is not truly separate from the bearer of Śakti. This distinction is only an initial teaching device that leads into recognition.

For one who has entered the state of Śakti (śakti-avasthā-praviṣṭasya | gen sg m ppp), meditation (bhāvanā | nom sg) [arises] through non-differentiation (nirvibhāgena | ins sg).
Then (tadā) this one (asau | nom sg m) would become of Śiva's form (śiva-rūpī | nom sg m); the Śaiva [meditation] (śaivī | nom sg f) is called (ucyate | 3p sg pas pres) the gate (mukham | nom sg) here (iha).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Whoever enters the state of Śakti enters nondual meditation. Then one experiences the essence of Śiva. Here, this śaivic power is the gateway into direct experience.

the distinction of directions and so on (dig-vibhāgādi | nom sg n) is known (jñāyate | 3p sg pas pres), so likewise (tadvat) Śiva (śivaḥ | nom sg) [is known] through Śakti (śaktyā | ins sg), O beloved (priye | voc sg f).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Just as directions and spaces are seen by lamplight and the rays of the sun, Śiva is known through Śakti, O beloved.
