Dattātreyayogaśāstra 141–142: Drawing the Navel Upward and Back

Jālandhara is said to make the body immortal. Uḍḍiyāṇa is natural or easy, is taught by the guru, and carefully draws the navel upward and backward.

It makes the body (deham | acc sg) immortal (amṛtī-kurute | 3p sg med pres); therefore (ataḥ) he should practise (abhyaset | 3p sg act opt) Jālandhara (jālandharam | acc sg). Uḍḍiyāṇa (uḍḍiyāṇam | acc sg), however (tu), is always (sadā) taught (kathitam | acc sg n) as natural (sahajam | acc sg n) by the teacher (guruṇā | ins sg).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Jālandhara is practised because it is said to make the body deathless. Uḍḍiyāṇa is then introduced as an accessible lock that must still be learned from a teacher.

One who practises (abhyaset | 3p sg act opt) untiringly (astatandraḥ | nom sg) becomes (bhavet | 3p sg act opt) young (taruṇaḥ | nom sg) even (api) when old (vṛddhaḥ | nom sg). From the navel (nābheḥ | gen sg), he should carefully (prayatnataḥ) perform (kuryāt | 3p sg act opt) the pull (tānam | acc sg) upward (ūrdhvam) and from there backward (ataḥ paścāt).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Regular Uḍḍiyāṇa practice is said to restore youthful vitality even in old age. Its characteristic action draws the region of the navel upward and backward.
