DYS 50–53: Obstacles

Dattātreyayogaśāstra 50–53: Laziness, Bad Company, and Seductive Detours

The text names laziness, the company of rogues, magical work with mantras, alchemy, and the search for buried treasure as obstacles. Like mirages, they should be recognised and abandoned by the discerning practitioner.

Because they (yatas te) would always be obstacles to yoga practice (vighna-bhūtāḥ syur yogābhyāsasya sarvadā), one should therefore (tat), carefully (prayatnena), avoid people like them (sadṛśān varjayet), including those whom one’s own mind produces as dear (buddhi-jān priyān | acc pl).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Because such people always obstruct yoga practice, they should be carefully avoided—even when one’s own mind makes them appear friendly and dear.
