If he practises (abhyaset | 3p sg act opt) for six months (ṣaṇ-māsam | acc sg), he certainly (eva) conquers (jayati | 3p sg act pres) death (mṛtyum | acc sg); there is no (na) doubt (saṃśayaḥ | nom sg). One who (yaḥ | nom sg) always (nityam) practises (abhyaset | 3p sg act opt) the root lock (mūla-bandham | acc sg) is (saḥ | nom sg) a knower of yoga (yoga-vit | nom sg).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
After six months of such practice, death is said to be conquered. One who regularly practises Mūlabandha is called a knower of yoga.

Having pressed (saṃpīḍya | abs) the anus (gudam | acc sg) with the heel (pārṣṇyā | ins sg), he should forcefully (balāt | abl sg) contract (ākuñcayet | 3p sg act opt) the perineum (yonim | acc sg), so that (yathā) the breath (samīraṇaḥ | nom sg) repeatedly (vāraṃ vāram | acc sg) moves upward (ūrdhvam samāyāti | 3p sg act pres).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
The heel presses the anal region while the perineum is repeatedly contracted, directing the breath upward.

Through the root lock (mūla-bandhena | ins sg), Prāṇa and Apāna (prāṇāpānau | nom du), together with (ca) inner sound and bindu (nāda-bindū | nom du), reach unity (ekatām | acc sg). Having become one (gatvā | abs), they bestow (yacchataḥ | 3p du pres) complete success (saṃsiddhim | acc sg) in yoga (yogasya | gen sg); there is no (na) doubt (saṃśayaḥ | nom sg).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
Through Mūlabandha, Prāṇa and Apāna, inner sound and bindu, are brought into union; this is said to yield complete success in yoga.
