Dattātreyayogaśāstra 84–86: Sexual Restraint as Protection of Vital Power

Women are said to desire sex with the beautiful yogi; if he yields, he loses bindu, lifespan, and strength. He should therefore avoid association with women, while continual preservation of bindu is said to give his body a pleasant fragrance.

At that time (tasmin kāle | loc sg), a great obstacle (mahāvighnaḥ | nom sg) can arise (syāt | 3p sg act opt) for the yogi (yoginaḥ | gen sg) through carelessness (pramādataḥ | abl sg). Captivated by his beauty (tadrūpavaśagāḥ | nom pl f), women (nāryaḥ | nom pl) desire (kāṃkṣante | 3p pl med pres) sexual intercourse (saṃgamam | acc sg) with him (tasya | gen sg m).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
At this point carelessness creates a serious danger: women are drawn to the yogi’s beauty.

If (yadi) he has sexual intercourse (saṃgam | acc sg) in this way (evam), doing so (karoti | 3p sg act pres) causes his (tasya | gen sg m) semen (binduḥ | nom sg) to be lost (vinaśyati | 3p sg act pres). Through the loss of semen (bindunāśāt | abl sg), his lifespan is diminished (āyuḥkṣayaḥ | nom sg), and (ca) weakness (asāmarthyam | nom sg) arises (jāyate | 3p sg med pres).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
If the yogi gives in to this desire, vital power is lost. The loss shortens life and brings weakness.

Therefore (tasmāt | abl sg n), he should carefully (ādarāt | abl sg) carry out (kuryāt | 3p sg act opt) his practice (abhyāsam | acc sg), avoiding association (saṃgavarjam | acc sg m) with women (strīṇām | gen pl). Through constant (satatam) retention of semen (bindudhāraṇāt | abl sg), a pleasant smell (sugandhaḥ | nom sg) should arise (syāt | 3p sg act opt) in the body (aṅge | loc sg) of the yogi (yoginaḥ | gen sg).
Dr. Ronald Steiner - 2026 - historically literal
The yogi therefore avoids sexual entanglement and continues to practise carefully. Preserving vital power is said to make the body smell pleasant.
